About exhibition
The artistic couple Antonio José Guzmán (Panama) and Iva Janković (Serbia) are a multidisciplinary duo whose creative paths crossed in Amsterdam, where they started their ongoing project Electric Dub Station in 2017.
After a significant exhibition and performance at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (2022), Guzmán and Janković were included in Adrian Pedrosa's curatorial selection at Arsenal during the 60th Venice Biennale (2024).
“Reconstruction of Stardust" presents a new cycle of works dealing with textiles, soundscapes, videos and performances related to geopolitical borders and indigenous identities within the history of textile arts. Their textile research deals with the complex issues of national identity, memory and homeland, which arise during the division of ancestral nations. Woven into the work of Guzmán and Janković is a deep-rooted conviction that our modern world was formed through migration.
The fabrics presented at the exhibition "Reconstruction of Stardust" are characterized by geometric and monochromatic expressions and influences of numerous migratory vernacular textile elements taken from the artistic duo's numerous trips to Dakar, Sao Paulo, Rio, Mumbai, Tokyo, Panama City, Guatemala, Serbia and Croatia. The fabrics are interwoven with an abstract matrix of intercultural genetic sequences that also represent the embodiment of global connections between America, Eastern Europe and Africa.
The curators of the exhibition are Mirjana Dušić and Ljuba Jovićević, while Isidora M. Nikolić is in charge of catalog design. The exhibition will be open until June 22.
The exhibition has been supported by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Belgrade, Levi9 Technology Services, KLM - Royal Dutch Airlines and Heineken Serbia.
